Each program runs for 6 weeks, with one 1 hour lesson per week. Lessons build on each other, so kids learn new skills step by step and get plenty of guided practice along the way. Our coaches celebrate every win, from a first roll to a first trick, so kids finish the 6 weeks with more confidence, better skills, and a love of skating.

Will is the co-owner of Westies, and a primary school teacher. Working with kids in the classroom has shaped how he coaches, and positive reinforcement is at the heart of every session.

Will is patient, friendly, and great with kids. He breaks each skill into clear, easy-to-follow steps, then guides riders through hands-on practice so they always know what to do next and feel supported while they do it. He celebrates every small win, from standing confidently on the board to landing a first drop-in, because he knows encouragement builds the confidence and resilience kids need to keep trying.

A lifelong skateboarder, Will understands that falling is part of the process. His sessions are relaxed and encouraging, and every beginner leaves feeling proud of what they achieved and keen to come back.

Skating has been a massive part of my life and all I want to do is introduce it to more people so they can experience the fun and social aspects of it.

When I was around 8 or 9, my brother and I use to play skate 3 and tech deck and then one day him and his friends suggested to just get a real board. My first board was given to me by my sister’s boyfriend at the time and honestly, I wasn’t interested but would still go and have a little roll at the park, but it wasn’t until high school where I met my mate Dan Pitcher (mad skater he rips) and he asked to go for a skate and its history from there.

Getting on the train for an hour to skate some Gold Coast skatepark was all a part of the fun. Skating has been nothing but beneficial for my life, mentally, meeting some of my lifelong friends, seeing places I never would’ve gone and of course, landing some dream tricks feels pretty good too.

Having been surrounded by all different types of skaters and seeing how different people learn has helped me cater towards different students learning processes.

I grew up skating since I was very young in New Zealand, getting my first board at 1 under the Christmas tree (albeit a plastic one).

I was lucky enough to have uncles that grew up skating through the 80s that taught me how to skate comfortably, though their knowledge around tricks was limited as they surf more than skate.

It wasn't until I moved to Australia at age 11 and found the Brisbane skate community that I truly started progressing.

My teenage years highlighted that skateboarding is best learned with a hands on approach, as the YouTube videos I tried to learn from couldn't point out ways to improve like someone could in person.

FAQ
What is the Learn to Skate program?

Our 6 week Learn to Skate program teaches kids to skate in a fun, supportive group. Our coaches break each skill into clear, easy-to-follow steps, then guide riders through hands-on practice with plenty of encouragement. There are programs for every stage, from first-time riders to kids ready to learn tricks.

Which level is right for my child?
  • Groms: for little shredders under 6 years old, taking their first steps on a board.
  • Beginner: for kids who are brand new to skating and want to learn the basics, like standing, pushing, rolling, and stopping.
  • Level 1: for kids who can already roll and push and are ready to build confidence and learn new skills.
  • Level 2: for kids who are comfortable on the board and ready to improve their tricks.

Not sure where to start? Contact us and we’ll help you choose.

What ages are the lessons for?

Our group lessons are open to kids and teens up to 18 years old. Groms is for kids under 6.

Do you teach adults?

For adults, we recommend a 1 on 1 lesson with one of our coaches. We hope to open an adults-only Learn to Skate class soon, so keep an eye on this page.
